The ounce value is a size category that travelled with the format from the American coffee market. It describes the family the cup belongs to rather than the liquid it will hold on the counter. The millilitre value is the working volume, measured to the fill line that leaves room for a lid, for foam and for the few millimetres a barista needs to carry the cup without spilling it. Fill a cup to the absolute brim and you will get closer to the mathematical conversion, but nobody serves a drink that way.

The trade off is that a PET cup will not take a hot drink, and the stated size behaves differently. Print area is a function of cup geometry. A tall narrow cup gives a different canvas from a short wide one, and a design that works at 12 oz can crowd at 4 oz. Send artwork together with the intended size rather than separately, so the print area, the number of colours and the position of the rolled rim can be checked before production rather than after.

Minimum order quantities generally relate to the print setup rather than to the cup, which is why an unprinted order and a printed order of the same size can have very different thresholds. We are switching suppliers and already have a large stock of lids. How do I make sure new cups will fit the lids we own?

Measure the outer rim diameter of the cup the lids currently sit on, in millimetres, and ask every candidate supplier for that same measurement. Volume is irrelevant here. A rim of 80 mm and a rim of 90 mm belong to different lid families even if both cups are sold as 12 oz. I need to work out freight before I place the order. What information do I need from the supplier to calculate it myself?

Four values are enough: how many cups are in one carton, the outer dimensions of that carton in millimetres, the gross weight of the carton, and how many cartons the supplier normally loads into a 20 foot and a 40 foot high cube container. From the carton dimensions you can calculate the volume yourself and cross check the supplier's container figures. If the two do not agree, ask, because one of the numbers is wrong and it will show up as a shortfall on the packing list.

Is a PET cup interchangeable with a paper cup of the same stated size?

Not automatically. PET cups tend to be produced in a family that shares one rim diameter across several volumes, so a single lid fits the whole range, which is convenient for cold drinks service. Paper cups instead change rim diameter as the volume grows. So a 16 oz PET cup and a 16 oz paper cup may hold a similar amount of liquid yet need entirely different lids, and they stack differently in the carton.
