Heat Resistant Paper Cups: What Coating Can Take
What heat resistance really means inside a cup

Buyers who ask for heat resistant paper cups are rarely asking about the paper. A cup that takes a fresh americano without going soft, without a damp ring on the outside and without losing its shape in someone's hand is doing that with three things at once: the weight of the board, the thin polyethylene film laminated onto the inner face, and the way the rim and the side seam are formed. The board carries the structure, the film carries the barrier, and the rim keeps the cup round while a customer walks out with it.
That distinction matters the moment you write a purchase specification. "Please make them heat resistant" is not something a production line can quote against, because there is no single dial marked heat. There are board grammages, film weights, rim diameters and wall constructions, and each one is either written on your order or left to chance. Buyers who put those four items in writing get consistent cases; buyers who leave them out get whatever the line was running that week. In practice, heat resistant paper cups are simply the cups whose board, film, rim and wall construction were all agreed before production started.
Heat resistant paper cups: the three layers that do the work
Take one of our hot cups apart in your head and you find a short list of measurable things.
- Board grammage. Single wall hot cups run from 170 g/m² on the 100 ml (4 oz) size up to 295 g/m² on the 500 ml (16 oz) size. Heavier board does not make the cup hotter or cooler on the inside; it makes the wall stiffer, so the cup keeps its geometry when a hand squeezes it and the contents are near serving temperature.
- Inner film. Hot cups carry the polyethylene film on the inner face at 18 g/m². Cold cups are built differently, with film on both faces, because condensation attacks a cold cup from the outside while heat and steam attack a hot cup from the inside.
- Rim and seam. The rolled rim is the part that keeps the cup circular and gives a lid something to clamp onto. Our hot cups roll to 80 mm on the 240 ml and 350 ml sizes and to 90 mm on the 400 ml and 500 ml sizes, which is also why lid families are organised by rim diameter rather than by volume.
None of those three is exotic, and that is the point. Heat resistance in this product is not a coating trick, it is a set of ordinary numbers that either appear on your specification sheet or do not.
Pouring hot liquid and heating in an oven are two different loads
The most common misunderstanding we hear from cafés and offices is that a cup which happily holds a fresh filter coffee will also survive two minutes in a microwave. It will not, and the reason is worth understanding rather than memorising.
When you pour, the liquid arrives hot and starts losing heat immediately. The wall warms from the inside, the outside stays cooler, and the whole system moves in one direction: down. When you heat the same cup with its contents in place, energy is being pushed into the liquid continuously. Steam is driven against the inner film from below, the seam and the rolled rim heat up alongside the liquid, and any print on the outer wall is exposed to a load nobody designed it for. Search volume for microwave safe cups is dominated by reusable mugs and household ware for exactly this reason: single use hot cups are built for service, not for reheating.
Heat resistant paper cups are specified for service temperature, not for reheating, and no film weight changes that. The practical rule for a café or a canteen is short. Pour into the cup, serve, and let it cool. Do not reheat a drink in the cup it was served in, do not put a lidded cup into an oven of any kind, and do not treat a paper cup as cookware because it happens to be holding something hot.
Coffee cup temperature is felt in three places
When a customer complains about hot coffee cups being too hot, they almost never mean the drink. They mean the outer wall under their fingers, or the rim against their lip, or a cup that has gone slightly floppy on the walk back to the table. Each of those has its own answer.
The hand is the easiest to solve. A double wall cup puts an air gap between the drink and the fingers, which is why the same 240 ml volume measures 87.5 mm tall in single wall and 95 mm in double wall: the outer shell is a separate piece of board with air between the layers. If your staff currently double cup or reach for a sleeve, a double wall cup at 240 ml (8 oz) removes both habits and the extra item from your stock list.
The lip is about the rim, not the wall. A rim rolled tightly and evenly feels smooth and stays circular; a loose one feels sharp and lets steam past the lid. The wall going soft is usually a grammage question and sometimes a storage question, which is a separate matter we come back to below.
Choosing between single and double wall without over specifying
Both builds can be supplied as heat resistant paper cups; the difference is where the heat is felt, not whether the cup copes with it. Double wall is not automatically the right answer. It costs more board, it ships in smaller cases, and for a lot of menus it solves a problem that is not there. A useful way to divide the range is by how long the drink stays in the customer's hand.
- Sit in service, short drinks, tray to table: single wall is usually enough. A single wall cup at 350 ml (12 oz) ships 2.000 pieces per case, which keeps storage simple for a busy counter.
- Takeaway, long walks, no sleeves in stock: double wall. The 240 ml double wall ships 500 per case, so plan the shelf space before you switch the whole range.
- Mixed operation: keep one double wall size for the drinks that leave the building and single wall for everything else, rather than converting all sizes at once.
Lids, steam and the difference between hot and cold
Lid choice is where heat and shape meet. A lid does not sit on a volume, it sits on a rim, so an 80 mm cup takes an 80 mm lid family and a 90 mm cup takes a 90 mm one. Get that wrong and you get exactly the failures people blame on the cup: a lid that pops when the drink is hot, or one that never clicked on properly in the first place.
Heat matters here in a second way. Dome lids in transparent plastic belong to cold service; hot drinks are served with paper lids in the 80 mm and 90 mm families, matched to the rim of the cup underneath. If you are ordering a new cup size, order the matching lid in the same conversation, and check the rim diameter on both lines of the specification rather than the oz label on the front of the case.
Steam is the reason drink lids have a small vent or a raised sip position. That opening is not decoration; it lets pressure out so the lid stays seated. A lid taped or forced onto a rim it was not made for will lift as soon as the contents are hot.
Storage does more damage than service ever will
Most of the soft cup complaints we are asked to investigate turn out to be storage, not specification. Board is hygroscopic. A case left open next to a dishwasher, stacked against a warm wall, or kept on the floor of a damp store room takes up moisture, and a slightly damp cup feels soft as soon as it is filled. The cup did not fail at service temperature; it was already softened before the drink went in. Even heat resistant paper cups behave badly once the board has taken up water.
Three habits fix nearly all of it. Keep cases closed until the sleeve is opened, keep them off the floor and away from heat sources such as ovens, dishwashers and direct sun, and rotate stock so old cases do not sit at the back of a hot store room for months. If you buy in pallet quantities, ask your supply chain where the pallets sit between the container and your counter, because that leg is often the wettest and the hottest part of the journey.
What to put in writing when you order heat resistant paper cups
Every point above can be turned into a line on an order, which is the only place it actually protects you. When we quote hot cups, these are the fields that decide whether the cups behave the way you expect.
- Volume in ml as well as oz. The oz label is a family name, not a measurement, and cups sold under the same oz number can differ in millilitres between markets.
- Board grammage per size. Ask for the figure rather than an adjective, and check it is quoted per size instead of as a single number for the whole range.
- Inner film weight. For hot cups this is the paper cup lining that keeps liquid off the board; ours is stated at 18 g/m² on the inner face for the hot range.
- Rim diameter and matching lid. 80 mm or 90 mm decides which lid family fits, and it belongs on the cup line, not in a footnote.
- Wall construction. Single or double, size by size, so the case counts and the storage plan are right before the container is loaded.
- Print, if any. Printed cups run through an extra process, and the print position relative to the rim is part of the specification too.

A short checklist before you send the enquiry
Specifying heat resistant paper cups is mostly a measuring job, and it starts on your own counter. Look at your current cups first. Measure the rim with a caliper, write down the millilitre volume rather than the oz name, note whether your staff are doubling up or using sleeves, and check where the cases are stored. Those four answers describe the cup you actually need, and they take about ten minutes to collect.

Frequently asked questions
I run a small coffee bar and my cups start feeling soft a few minutes after I fill them. Is that a heat problem or something else?
It is usually not the drink. A cup that softens quickly has either too light a board for the size, or it absorbed moisture in storage before it was used. Check the grammage on your specification against the volume you are filling, then look at where the cases sit: an open sleeve next to a dishwasher or on a damp floor will soften cups long before hot liquid does.
My team wants to reheat leftover coffee in the same paper cup in the office microwave. Is that acceptable?
No. Single use hot cups are designed for hot liquid to be poured in and then cool down, not for energy to be pushed into the contents while they sit in the cup. Reheating drives steam against the inner film, heats the seam and rim at the same time, and exposes any outer print to a load it was not made for. Pour the drink into a microwave safe vessel instead.
I am comparing two quotations and one lists an inner film weight while the other only says coated. What should I ask the second one for?
Ask for the film weight in g/m², the face it is applied to, and the board grammage for each size separately. Coated on its own tells you nothing measurable and cannot be checked when the goods arrive. A supplier who cannot state those numbers per size is quoting a family of cups rather than the cup you asked for.
We serve tea and hot chocolate as well as coffee. Does the drink itself change which cup I should specify?
The specification stays the same, but the way the drink behaves does not. Thick, sugary drinks hold heat for longer and keep the wall warm further into the cup's service life, so a double wall or a larger board grammage is more noticeable on a hot chocolate menu than on a short espresso menu. Volume matters too, since a bigger cup means more mass staying hot for longer.
Can I use the same lids for my hot cups and my cold cups if the two cups look about the same height?
Only if the rim diameters match, and often they do not. Lids sit on the rolled rim, not on the volume, so an 80 mm cup needs an 80 mm lid family and a 90 mm cup a 90 mm one. Transparent dome lids also belong to cold service, so pairing them with hot drinks is a mistake even when the diameter happens to be right.
How should I store cases of cups in a hot, humid kitchen so they are still usable in three months?
Keep the cases closed until you open a sleeve, keep them off the floor, and keep them away from ovens, dishwashers, steam and direct sunlight. Rotate stock so the oldest case is used first. Board takes up moisture from the air, and a cup that has been sitting in a damp corner will feel soft the moment it is filled, whatever its grammage says.
